The Bauchi State Government has designated Monday, August 17, 2026, as a statewide public holiday to ensure that civil and public servants, alongside other eligible citizens, can fully participate in the upcoming Local Government Council elections. This directive extends to all workers within local, state, and federal government establishments operating in Bauchi State, as well as employees in the banking sector.

This decision was officially communicated on Friday through a statement issued by Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity. Gidado explained that the declaration aligns with the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission's announcement, which scheduled the Local Government Council elections across the state for Monday.

The primary objective of this measure, according to Gidado, is to grant all qualified citizens the necessary time and opportunity to exercise their fundamental constitutional right to vote without encountering any impediments from their official duties. He specifically stated, “The declaration is intended to provide eligible citizens the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote and contribute to the democratic process at the grassroots level without disruption arising from official duties.” He further clarified that, “However, workers engaged in essential services are exempted.”

The governor's aide appealed to all residents of the state to turn out in large numbers, cast their votes peacefully, and adhere strictly to electoral laws. He also implored eligible voters to maintain responsible conduct throughout the pre-election, election, and post-election periods. Gidado affirmed, “The State Government assures citizens that all relevant authorities will work to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral environment and urges everyone to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials in the discharge of their responsibilities.” The state government conveyed its best wishes for a peaceful and successful Local Government Council election to all residents.
