INEC Pushes Voter Registration Deadline, Unveils Online Portal for Nigerians

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has prolonged the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional fortnight. Alongside this extension, the electoral umpire also introduced an innovative online self-service platform designed for qualified first-time voters. This significant update was communicated in an official statement released on Friday, bearing the signature of Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
INEC stated that this decision came after a thorough evaluation of the ongoing registration process and considering input from its various state offices, political parties, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders. The CVR, which originally kicked off on August 18, 2025, was initially set to conclude on July 10, 2026. This exercise is widely anticipated to be the final extensive voter registration drive leading up to the 2027 general elections. With the new adjustment, the commission has now shifted the deadline to Friday, July 24, 2026, aiming to ensure a greater number of eligible citizens can enroll for upcoming polls.
The statement emphasized, “The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters.”
Furthermore, INEC unveiled details of the new online self-service portal. This digital solution will empower eligible Nigerians to commence and finalize their voter registration procedures, including the crucial biometric data capture, directly from their personal devices, thereby eliminating the need for physical visits to any INEC office. The commission assured users that comprehensive, step-by-step instructions would be readily accessible on the portal.
INEC affirmed the robustness of the new system, highlighting its “robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks designed to preserve the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.” The electoral body strongly encouraged all qualified Nigerians who have not yet registered to utilize both the extended registration window and the newly introduced convenient online option.
The statement concluded by reiterating, “The commission remains committed to a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process, and to advancing the use of technology to improve citizens’ experience in the electoral process.”
