Ondo Communities Submerged: Chevron Activities Blamed for Coastal Erosion

A recent investigation has uncovered the devastating impact of coastal erosion on over 10 communities in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. The relentless incursion of the Atlantic Ocean has led to the displacement of thousands of residents, with many seeking refuge in churches. Communities such as Awoye, Mese, Odofado, and Opakaba have been severely affected, with residents attributing the crisis to years of environmental degradation and dredging activities allegedly linked to Chevron's oil operations. The destruction of natural barriers has left entire settlements exposed to the devastating sea incursions. Historical grievances against Chevron date back to 1998, when members of the Ilaje ethnic group staged a protest at a Chevron offshore oil platform, accusing the company of causing environmental and economic devastation. The protest turned violent after Chevron allegedly invited Nigerian security operatives to intervene, resulting in the death of two protesters. For many residents, this incident remains a symbol of decades of neglect and environmental injustice in communities hosting major oil installations. A journey through the affected communities reveals a stark contrast between the enormous oil wealth extracted from the area and the harsh realities faced by residents. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children have been forced to seek shelter in churches, with many expressing frustration and desperation. According to Prince Philemon Ebiesuwa, a community leader, the environmental disaster has reached alarming levels, with entire settlements at risk of disappearing if urgent intervention is not provided. Residents are calling on the government to intervene and provide assistance to those affected by the crisis.
