Full Story
The recently established Kaura Gwandu College of Nursing and Midwifery Science in Kebbi State has officially taken in 172 new students. The institution anticipates its inaugural cohort of National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) professionals will complete their studies and graduate by 2028. Dr. Muhammad Musa, the Provost of the college, shared this information on Wednesday during a discussion with Governor Nasir Idris's media team. He lauded the governor's initiative in founding the college, emphasizing its role in broadening opportunities for healthcare training.
Dr. Musa highlighted that the new college has significantly eased the enrollment burden on the State College of Nursing Sciences in Birnin Kebbi. Furthermore, he noted its contribution to job creation and boosting economic activities within Kebbi State. He confirmed that the initial intake of students is presently undergoing examinations, with 80 individuals specifically taking the National Diploma examination.
The Provost reiterated, “The first set of students is currently writing examinations, while the first batch of ND/HND graduates is expected in 2028.” He also mentioned that all preparations are now complete for the admission of the college's second intake of students. Dr. Musa expressed confidence that the college would steadily increase access to vital nursing and midwifery education.
Additionally, Dr. Musa revealed that the college has drawn applicants from various states beyond Kebbi, citing examples like Imo, Enugu, Niger, Ogun, and Kaduna. He posited that this increasing interest from other regions underscores the institution's capability to evolve into a prominent hub for educating healthcare practitioners.
Dr. Musa affirmed that the college boasts a team of qualified lecturers, well-equipped laboratories, a comprehensive library, and modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources, all geared towards facilitating effective instruction and learning. He also recognized the Kebbi State government's crucial support in providing necessary infrastructure, such as accommodation for staff, separate hostels for male and female students, and robust security measures, thereby fostering an optimal learning atmosphere.
The Provost reiterated the institution's dedication to upholding rigorous academic benchmarks and graduating highly capable nursing and midwifery professionals. These graduates are intended to bolster healthcare services within Kebbi State and wider regions. He further stated that the college intends to enforce strict discipline among its students, especially concerning adherence to dress codes and proactive measures against examination misconduct.
Dr. Musa praised Governor Idris for meticulously following all required protocols prior to the college's establishment, highlighting that this adherence allowed the institution to commence operations smoothly and maintain its academic schedule. Nevertheless, he made an appeal to the state government for further assistance, specifically requesting rural posting allowances, teaching allowances, and an increased deployment of security personnel to enhance safety for both the college and its neighbouring areas.
Finally, he called upon the local populace to back government initiatives and policies designed to broaden educational access and fortify the state's healthcare manpower. The creation of this college is poised to boost the pool of skilled nursing and midwifery professionals available for healthcare delivery, simultaneously opening up more career pathways in the medical sector for young individuals.
