As Nigeria commemorates its 66th year of independence, Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has called on citizens to sustain optimism, foster unity, and offer prayers for their leaders across all tiers of government. Governor Idris conveyed this message on Thursday as part of his Independence Day felicitations to Nigerians and the residents of Kebbi State. He characterized the milestone as a time for collective national pride, profound contemplation, and rekindled aspirations. In his remarks, the governor emphasized, “Independence Anniversary is a moment of pride, reflection and renewed hope for our great nation.” He further stressed the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by Nigeria's pioneers and drawing inspiration from the steadfastness of its people, who consistently champion peace, economic output, and national cohesion.

Shifting focus to his administration's accomplishments, Governor Idris revealed that Kebbi State has implemented a N75,000 minimum wage, ensuring that civil servants receive their salaries and pensions promptly. He further announced that his government has settled outstanding gratuities, death benefits, and other arrears totaling over N10 billion. A recent disbursement of N2.11 billion was specifically allocated to resolve entitlements for 772 retirees and families of deceased state workers.

In the education sector, Idris highlighted the construction, renovation, and furnishing of over 2,000 schools across the state. Additionally, his government recruited 2,000 qualified teachers and put an end to the practice of casual employment within the teaching profession. Regarding healthcare, the governor reported the revitalization of 22 general hospitals, 179 primary healthcare centers, and 63 dispensaries, complemented by the recruitment of more than 2,200 medical personnel.

The governor also detailed significant infrastructure initiatives, which include the dualization of 88 roads, the establishment of a new State Secretariat, and the development of an ultra-modern Central Motor Park. He noted ongoing efforts to construct over 300 kilometers of rural roads, vital for linking agricultural communities to markets. Furthermore, more than 800 mass transit buses have been introduced to enhance public transportation services.

Addressing agriculture and economic empowerment, Governor Idris announced that Kebbi State successfully secured a $45 billion financing package from the African Development Bank. This funding is earmarked for the Special Agro-Processing Zone located in Argungu, which will feature transformation centers in Kalgo and Zuru. He stated, “Through the Kaura Cares Livelihood Programme, we disbursed N100,000 each to 65,000 citizens, supported 3,200 persons with disabilities and empowered women and youth entrepreneurs.”

Continuing his enumeration of achievements, Idris mentioned the distribution of 500 affordable housing units to civil servants and the appointment of five women as permanent secretaries, underscoring his administration's commitment to staff welfare and gender equality. He also revealed an investment exceeding N30 billion in enhancing security across the state, alongside an allocation of N15 billion towards crucial water supply and rural electrification initiatives.

Governor Idris highlighted the success of the inaugural Kebbi Investors Forum, which garnered investment pledges worth $4.1 billion. These commitments span key sectors such as mining, renewable energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics. He affirmed his government's dedication to converting these pledges into tangible employment, economic prospects, and enhanced living standards for the state's populace.

In his closing remarks, Idris implored Nigerians to establish unity, peace, and patriotism as the bedrock for the nation's future developmental trajectory. He declared, “As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, let us reject division and embrace unity. Let our diversity remain our strength as we work together to build a secure, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.” The governor further encouraged citizens to actively back ongoing development initiatives and to persistently pray for the nation's leadership, asserting that Nigeria's current challenges are surmountable through collective unity, unwavering perseverance, accountable leadership, and shared dedication.
