IBB Varsity Student Dies from Stray Bullet in Niger Land Dispute

Isma'il Ishaq Magaji, a 400-level student pursuing Public Administration at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), has tragically lost his life after being hit by a stray bullet. The unfortunate incident occurred during a land dispute in his hometown of Wawa, located in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Alhaji Baba Akote, the Deputy Registrar for Information at IBBUL, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lapai, Niger, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. He stated that Magaji succumbed to his injuries after being caught in the crossfire of the communal land conflict.

Professor Mohammed Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, conveyed his deepest condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and associates of the deceased. He described the incident as profoundly distressing and a painful loss that has affected the entire university community.

The Vice-Chancellor offered prayers to Almighty Allah, asking for forgiveness for the deceased's shortcomings, granting him eternal rest, and providing his family and loved ones with the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Furthermore, Professor Sulaiman appealed to the communities embroiled in the dispute to embrace dialogue, exercise restraint, and prioritize peaceful coexistence to avert further loss of lives and unnecessary bloodshed.
