Gombe's Maryam Dan’azumi Triumphs at Saudi Qur’anic Competition

Maryam Ibrahim Dan’azumi, a gifted scholar from Gombe State, has secured the top prize at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition, held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Representing Nigeria, Maryam, who attends Abubakar Siddiq Community Islamic School in Gombe's Herwagana Quarters, showcased her exceptional skills in Makkah. Her category involved the complete memorisation of the Holy Qur’an, encompassing recitation, Tajweed, and interpretation across 60 Hizb with Tafsir. Her remarkable achievement saw her defeat numerous international contestants, bringing significant global acclaim to both Gombe State and Nigeria.
Eyewitnesses at the event highlighted the profound importance of her win, noting that this 46th edition was the very first time women were allowed to participate in the competition's 46-year history, thus making her success a truly historic milestone.
In response to this impressive feat, Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, extended his felicitations to Maryam, her relatives, instructors, and the broader Muslim community within the state. He characterized her accomplishment as a tremendous source of pride for both Gombe and the entire nation. Details of his commendation were released via a press statement issued by Ismaila Misilli, Director-General of Press Affairs at Gombe Government House, and subsequently obtained by our correspondent.
Governor Yahaya remarked that Maryam’s success underscored the virtues of discipline, steadfastness, and a strong commitment to education. He further stated that her triumph on a global platform showcased the exceptional talent and promise inherent in the youth of Gombe State.
Quoting the governor directly, he expressed: “I am deeply proud of our daughter’s exceptional achievement on the global stage. Maryam’s triumph exemplifies the excellence and rich educational heritage of Gombe State. Her victory brings pride not only to Gombe but to Nigeria as a whole. I am particularly confident that this feat will inspire numerous young people, especially our girls, to pursue excellence and distinguish themselves in their chosen fields.”
Governor Yahaya also reiterated his administration's unwavering dedication to fostering the educational growth of young citizens, including studies in Qur’anic and other religious disciplines. He described these as crucial for cultivating discipline, strong character, and responsible citizenship. He added that his government remains committed to acknowledging and celebrating individuals whose achievements enhance Gombe State's reputation both domestically and globally.
He further stated: “Our commitment to promoting the educational journey of young people, particularly in the realm of religious studies, remains unwavering. We recognise its role in moulding character and contributing to societal development. Gombe is known for excellence, and we shall continue to identify with those who promote the good image of Gombe to the world. Maryam is one of such people, and we are proud to celebrate her.”
The governor highlighted that Maryam’s accomplishment was particularly noteworthy given her ascent from local triumphs to state, then national, and finally international acclaim. He recounted that Maryam had previously secured first place at the Gombe Local Government Area level, followed by another first in Gombe State, and subsequently a national victory, which qualified her to represent Nigeria at the Makkah competition in Saudi Arabia.
Yahaya expressed his anticipation of personally welcoming and honoring Maryam upon her return to Nigeria. He emphasized that such recognition would serve as an encouragement for her to maintain her pursuit of excellence and inspire other young individuals to strive for comparable achievements. Consequently, he urged parents, educators, religious organizations, and other relevant parties to persist in cultivating young talents by offering them the necessary backing and chances to develop their skills and make valuable contributions to society.
The governor also recognized the pivotal role played by the Abubakar Siddiq Community Islamic School for Qur’anic Memorisation in Maryam’s journey, acknowledging the institution's substantial contribution to her success. Our correspondent noted an interesting detail: Governor Yahaya himself served as the pioneer Chairman of the school's Board before taking office as Gombe State Governor, a position he later handed over to Architect Yunusa Yakubu.
