FG Directs Rapid Reconstruction for Borno Bridges Hit by 2024 Floods

The Federal Government of Nigeria is stepping up its efforts to restore vital infrastructure in Borno State, which was severely impacted by the 2024 floods. Honourable Uba Maigari Ahmadu, the Minister of State for Regional Development, recently concluded an inspection of significant projects spearheaded by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), where he emphasized the critical need for prompt completion of all reconstruction activities.
Minister Ahmadu commenced his two-day inspection tour in Maiduguri on Monday, primarily focusing on infrastructure projects designed to reinstate accessibility, bolster public services, and aid the state's recovery following the devastating floods. Among the key sites visited were the nine-span Fori-Galtimari Bridge and the six-span Moromoro Bridge. Both structures collapsed during the 2024 flooding, effectively severing crucial transportation routes and impeding movement within the affected communities.
The Minister also assessed the ongoing construction of a 250-bed student hostel at the Mohammed Lawan College of Agriculture in Borno State. This project represents another significant intervention by the NEDC, aimed at enhancing educational infrastructure across the region.
During his visit to the Fori-Galtimari Bridge site, Ahmadu acknowledged the commendable progress made by the NEDC and the contractors. However, he issued a stern warning, insisting that all projects must adhere strictly to approved specifications and be delivered within the stipulated timelines. “I want to commend the NEDC and the contractors, but I hope that when next we come here, this bridge would have been fully delivered and access roads would have also been completed to the benefit of residents around here,” the Minister stated.
This directive underscores a renewed focus on expediting the completion of these bridges, which are pivotal for restoring essential transportation links and alleviating the hardships faced by residents and communities affected by the 2024 floods. The extensive flooding in 2024 inflicted widespread damage across parts of Borno, destroying roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure, thus exacerbating the already complex challenges confronting communities still recovering from years of insecurity.
In response, the Federal Government, operating through the NEDC, has intensified its reconstruction and development initiatives across the North-East. These latest projects are integral to a broader strategy to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure and bolster the region’s overall resilience. Ahmadu affirmed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to supporting interventions geared towards rebuilding critical infrastructure and enhancing living conditions throughout the North-East. The Minister’s inspection itinerary was scheduled to continue on Tuesday with visits to other NEDC-funded projects across Borno State. Upon their successful completion, these projects are expected to improve connectivity, facilitate access to essential services, and provide additional institutional infrastructure, thereby reinforcing ongoing reconstruction and recovery efforts in Borno State.
