Eight-Year-Old Chinemelum Chinonso Crowned Orumba Spelling Bee Champion

A remarkable display of academic prowess saw eight-year-old Chinemelum Chinonso, a Primary Four pupil from Gaius Benton School, Oko, in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, emerge victorious in Season 3 of the Joseph Onuorah Foundation's spelling bee competition. Chinonso outshone contestants from 150 other nursery and primary schools to clinch the overall winner title in the recently concluded event.
The keenly contested grand finale, which took place over the weekend at the packed Ndiowu Town Hall in Enumgbom Village, Ndiowu, drew a significant crowd. Parents, teachers, key education stakeholders, traditional leaders, community representatives, and enthusiastic supporters gathered to witness what has become one of the most prestigious academic contests for primary school children in the area.
Chief Joseph Onuorah, founder of the Joseph Onuorah Foundation, expressed his delight at the event's success. He stated that the competition is specifically designed to foster literacy, expand vocabulary, build public speaking confidence, and promote academic excellence among children aged seven to twelve across the beneficiary council areas.
Speaking at the historic grand finale on Friday, Onuorah highlighted Chinonso's outstanding achievement: “Chinonso emerged overall winner of the highly acclaimed Orumba Spelling Bee Season 3, defeating other contestants drawn from more than 150 participating schools across Orumba North and Orumba South Local Government Areas of Anambra State.” He further added, “What unfolded at the grand finale was nothing short of extraordinary. The boy conquered the giants.”
Despite competing against older pupils in higher classes, Master Chinonso demonstrated exceptional composure, sharp intelligence, and a remarkable command of language. He successfully navigated multiple challenging rounds to secure the championship title. Representing his school and Ufuma, his hometown in Orumba North LGA, the young scholar consistently impressed both judges and spectators with his self-assurance, precision, and a vocabulary far beyond his years. The moment the final winning word was correctly spelled and his name announced as champion, the hall erupted in thunderous applause, with parents, teachers, and even fellow contestants celebrating his defining victory.
His triumph came with a coveted grand prize of N200,000, making him one of the youngest ever winners in the history of the Orumba Spelling Bee Competition. Other notable winners included Miss Geoffrey Chinaza, a 10-year-old Primary 6 pupil from Pope John Paul Nursery/Primary School, Oko (Orumba North LGA), who secured the second position and N100,000. Master Okoye God’s Purpose, an 11-year-old Primary 6 pupil from Living Spring School, Oko (Orumba North LGA), claimed the third position.
The foundation's founder confirmed that all winners received cash prizes, trophies, and certificates to acknowledge their impressive academic accomplishments. He also noted that the 2026 edition recorded the highest participation since the competition's inception. School proprietors, teachers, and parents present at the event extended their gratitude to the Foundation for its sustained efforts and consistent investment in children's educational development, noting that the competition has significantly boosted reading habits and motivated pupils towards greater learning and self-improvement.
