Ondo State Disburses N2.6 Billion Gratuity Funds to Retired Workers

The Ondo State administration has officially commenced the disbursement of over N2.6 billion in gratuities to former local government and primary school employees who concluded their service in 2015. This initiative, according to the government, is a testament to its dedication to the welfare of both active and retired personnel across the state.
During the ceremonial launch of the payment exercise held in Akure, the state capital, on Wednesday, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, stated that the release of these funds highlights his government’s resolute commitment to the well-being of the state’s senior citizens. He further explained that this action aligns with the objectives outlined in his administration's 'OUR EASE' development agenda.
Governor Aiyedatiwa remarked, “Our administration has already settled outstanding gratuity arrears for retirees from 2012, 2013, and 2014, and we are determined to clear all remaining gratuities before our tenure concludes.” He specified that a total sum of N2,614,266,954.88 would be directly deposited into the accounts of the beneficiaries from the 2015 cohort.
The governor attributed the successful release of these funds to meticulous planning, sound financial management, and his administration's unwavering resolve to prioritize the welfare of its people. He urged all beneficiaries to utilize the money prudently, particularly by investing in their health and overall welfare. He also extended commendation to the leaders of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers for their collaborative efforts and continuous advocacy for their members.
Earlier in the event, Amidu Takuro, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, revealed that the governor had mandated the monthly allocation of specific funds solely for the payment of retirees’ gratuities. He described this directive as a clear demonstration of the administration's commitment to worker welfare.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Johnson Osunyemi, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, expressed profound gratitude to the governor for maintaining the bulk payment system for gratuities. He noted that this gesture has rekindled hope and confidence among pensioners in the state, adding that monthly pensions have also been paid promptly since the inception of the current administration.
