As the world marks World Environment Day with the theme 'Now For Climate', the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, has emphasized the need for collective action in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. Ogbonna made this call while speaking with journalists in Umuahia, highlighting that the current theme, 'Global Call for Climate Action', underscores the urgency for everyone to play an active role in reducing activities that contribute to climate change. He noted that climate change has become a harsh reality globally, characterized by rising heat waves, irregular rainfall patterns, and other environmental disruptions. The commissioner revealed that the Abia State government, through its Department of Climate Change and other relevant agencies, has initiated proactive measures following predictions of potential flooding in the state due to abnormal rainfall patterns this year. One of the immediate steps being taken is the reactivation of Local Emergency Committees across the 17 local government areas to coordinate responses and minimize the impact of possible flooding. Additionally, the state government has intensified public enlightenment campaigns to ensure residents are aware of the flood predictions and are adequately prepared. The government is also collaborating with relevant agencies and civil society organizations to develop emergency response plans, including the preparation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps if needed. Ogbonna advised residents to remain vigilant and support government efforts by keeping drainages clean and avoiding activities that obstruct the free flow of stormwater, warning against indiscriminate waste disposal which can lead to flooding during heavy rainfall. He encouraged the sustainability of environmental cleanliness, particularly during the rainy season, emphasizing that collective action is essential to reducing the impact of climate change and safeguarding communities across the state. The state is currently working with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation on circular economy initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, with the hope of receiving support from national and international organizations for its climate response initiatives.
