Messi Recalls Ronaldinho's Crucial Mentorship During Early Barcelona Days

Full Story
Argentine football icon, Lionel Messi, has cast his mind back to his formative years at Barcelona, detailing how Brazilian maestro Ronaldinho played a pivotal role in helping him integrate into the club's senior team as a mere 16-year-old.
Messi made his professional debut for the Catalan giants in 2004, stepping into a locker room brimming with established footballing legends. He revealed that Ronaldinho, then one of Barcelona's most prominent figures, significantly eased his transition into the demanding senior squad.
Speaking to a group of students in Oviedo on Thursday, ahead of receiving the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, the Inter Miami forward confessed that the presence of such celebrated players initially left him feeling overwhelmed.
"I had to walk into a first-division dressing room packed with stars when I was just 16. I was nervous," Messi explained. "I had people like Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o, Xavi, Carlos Puyol and many others around me. It was difficult for me because of my personality. I’m shy and I found it hard to come out of my shell," he recounted, as reported by GB News on Friday.
Messi further shared that his seasoned teammates encouraged him to disregard their formidable reputations and instead concentrate on playing the beautiful game he had cherished since childhood. "What they told me was to forget about everything, forget the context, and just enjoy myself and do what I had been doing all my life since I was a kid, without thinking about who was next to me. They told me to do what I loved doing and what I enjoyed," he quoted.
Ultimately, the Argentine sensation would go on to etch his name in Barcelona's history books as their all-time leading goalscorer, securing a multitude of major trophies during his illustrious tenure at the Spanish club.
