Kogi Court Hands Death Sentence to Man for Friend's Killing

Full Story
A High Court in Okene, Kogi State, has handed down a death sentence by hanging to Abdulmutalib Abduljabar for the murder of his friend, Momohjimoh Abduljafar. Justice A.S. Hussein delivered the judgment on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, finding Abduljabar guilty of culpable homicide, an offense punishable by death under Section 221 of the Kogi State Penal Code, 2019 (as amended).
The presiding judge asserted that the prosecution presented compelling evidence that conclusively proved Abdulmutalib Abduljabar intentionally stabbed his friend to death. According to the prosecution counsel, Esther J. John, Esq., in her written submission, the tragic incident occurred on June 6, 2025, when the defendant used a sharp, lethal object to stab Momohjimoh Abduljafar at GKAS Hotel in Okene, resulting in his demise.
Justice Hussein dismissed the arguments put forth by the defendant's counsel, Baba Shehu Ahmad, and proceeded to sentence Abdulmutalib to death by hanging.
Following the verdict, the prosecuting counsel, Esther John, Esq., expressed her satisfaction, stating that justice had been served and commending Justice Hussein for his significant ruling. Conversely, the defense counsel, Baba Shehu Ahmad, indicated his intention to file an appeal after a thorough review of the certified true copy of the judgment. The family of the late Momohjimoh Abduljafar also conveyed their contentment with the court's decision.
