A Finnish appellate court has lessened the jail term handed to pro-Biafran activist, Simon Ekpa, bringing it down from six years to four years, even as it affirmed his conviction on charges linked to terr*rism. This development was reported on Thursday by the Finnish public broadcaster, Yle. The appeal court confirmed the earlier verdict by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which had found Ekpa culpable of involvement in a terr*rist organisation and for publicly instigating crimes with terr*rist intentions.

According to Yle’s report, Ekpa, who relocated to Finland from his home country Nigeria in 2007, was initially found guilty by the district court for his participation in a terr*rist group and for openly encouraging terr*rist acts. These accusations were connected to Ekpa’s alleged efforts to re-establish an independent state in the Biafra region of Nigeria’s southeast, a territory that briefly declared independence in the late 1960s.

The reduction in sentence by the appellate court came after a review of the circumstances surrounding Ekpa’s actions. Yle noted that the court observed the situation in the Biafra region bore a strong resemblance to a civil war, though it did not strictly meet the legal definition of one. During the appeal process, Ekpa had argued that his engagement in the political unrest within the region was not motivated by terr*rist aims. Conversely, the prosecutor had also appealed the initial judgment, contending that the six-year imprisonment was insufficient given the gravity of his offences. However, the decision delivered on Thursday is not yet definitive and remains open for further appeal to a higher judicial body.

The legal proceedings stem from Ekpa’s activities spanning from August 2021 to November 2024. During this period, the district court determined that he leveraged his substantial social media following to exacerbate tensions in the Biafra region, all as part of his campaign to create an independent state in southeastern Nigeria. Ekpa, a long-term resident of Lahti since his move from Nigeria in 2007, previously served as a council member for the Finnish city, representing the National Coalition Party.

This ruling follows his initial conviction in September 2025, when the Päijät-Häme District Court sentenced him to six years for terr*rism-related offences alongside other crimes. PUNCH Online had previously reported that the court found him guilty of participating in a terr*rist organisation, inciting crimes for terr*rist purposes, aggravated tax fraud, and breaching the Lawyers Act. Furthermore, the court established that Ekpa had supplied weapons, explosives, and ammunition to armed groups through his network and had encouraged his followers on X (formerly Twitter) to commit criminal acts in Nigeria. Ekpa consistently denied these charges throughout his trial. His apprehension in Finland in November 2024 occurred after investigations into alleged separatist activities linked to the push for an independent Biafran state. The Biafra region, located in Nigeria’s southeast, declared its independence in 1967, leading to a civil war that concluded in 1970 with the failure of the secessionist movement.

In related news, authorities in Kebbi State have secured the conviction of 19 individuals on terr*rism and other charges. Also, security intelligence indicates that terr*rists are increasingly employing artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency to evade security agencies, a point highlighted by Ribadu. Both Ribadu and the African Union further noted that these groups are leveraging social media and crypto assets for recruitment and to finance their attacks.
