FG Alarmed by Antimicrobial Resistance Fatalities, Issues Fresh Warning

Full Story
Nigeria's Federal Government has articulated its deep concern over the escalating menace of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This critical health challenge was reportedly linked to the premature demise of approximately 64,500 individuals across Nigeria in the year 2019. The government's declaration underscores the severe public health implications of drug-resistant infections, which occur when microbes develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them, making treatments ineffective. This growing threat necessitates urgent attention to combat the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, which contribute significantly to the development of AMR, posing a serious risk to the nation's healthcare system and its citizens' well-being.
