Homicide Charges Filed Against North Carolina Mother After Teen's Malnutrition Death

Full Story
A 45-year-old woman in North Carolina, United States, Kymberli Bowden, is now facing a first-degree homicide charge following the tragic death of her 13-year-old daughter. The young girl, identified as ZT, reportedly weighed a mere 35 pounds at the time of her passing, a result of severe malnutrition.
According to an autopsy report cited by FOX 8 News, ZT succumbed to acute necrotizing pneumonia and inanition – a critical condition characterized by extreme malnutrition and physical wasting. Her body was discovered on October 14, 2025, at her mother's residence in High Point. Investigators estimate that she had been deceased for approximately two days before her body was found.
During court proceedings, prosecutors highlighted the medical examiner's description of the teenager, who was noted as being severely emaciated, with matted hair, a gaunt face, and deeply sunken eyes. Prior medical records indicated that ZT had previously weighed between 63 and 65 pounds.
Law enforcement was alerted to Bowden's home after concerned family members reported not having seen the girl for several months. Upon arrival, officers also found ZT's 13-year-old twin brother alive within the house. A warrant obtained by The News & Observer revealed that the boy was suffering from inadequate nutrition, insufficient clothing, and unsanitary living conditions. He is also reported to have endured significant psychological harm.
Police records further show that neighbours had previously requested welfare checks on the children due to their concerns. Descriptions of the home indicated it was filled with rubbish and rotten food. Initially, Bowden was charged with two counts of felony child abuse and concealing a death. The more severe homicide charge was introduced after authorities received the conclusive findings from the autopsy. If convicted, she could face a life sentence. Her next court appearance is slated for December.
