Christa Pike Lives After Two Lethal Injections During Botched Tennessee Execution

Full Story
A female inmate on death row, Christa Pike, has been admitted to the hospital after reportedly surviving two doses of lethal injection drugs. Pike's execution was initially scheduled for 10 am on Wednesday, September 30, at a maximum-security facility in Nashville. Although a last-minute stay temporarily halted the process, the Supreme Court eventually gave the green light for the execution to proceed hours later.
More than an hour after the execution drug was administered, Pike's legal team confirmed she was still alive. This unprecedented event has led Tennessee authorities to suspend all executions for the remainder of the year, pending a full investigation. Witnesses who were present at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, where the execution was carried out, have since been released and spoke to the media, describing the events as "nothing we saw was normal."
They highlighted the abnormally prolonged nature of the process, noting that the curtain to the execution chamber was drawn multiple times during the lethal injection. Associated Press journalist Kim Chandler, who has observed numerous executions but none previously in Tennessee, shared her observations. She stated that Pike appeared "noticeably awake as the execution began." Chandler recounted that the blinds were first closed at 7:46 pm, reopened at 7:49 pm, and then Pike's mouth opened several times, followed by loud snoring and gasps.
The curtain was closed for the final time at 8:06 pm, yet Pike's loud snoring, indicating she was clearly alive, could still be heard from the chamber until media witnesses were instructed to leave the area around 8:53 pm.
Pike, now 50, was handed a death sentence for a murder she committed at the age of 18. She was convicted for the killing of Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old fellow student in a training program. Pike claimed she was convinced Ms. Slemmer was attempting to steal her boyfriend, who later received a life sentence for his involvement in the murder.
Her attorneys quickly filed an emergency petition to halt the execution, presenting court documents that alleged Pike had received two syringes of the execution drug, pentobarbital, but remained conscious. They wrote, "Ms Pike has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat and is audibly snoring," emphasizing her need for "immediate medical care" in statements to local media.
Prior to the execution, Pike had expressed in a letter to NBC that she harbored no fear of death. One of her final requests was for an all-female execution team, a preference stemming from a lifelong history of s*xual abuse and violence, which, according to court documents, made her terrified of being restrained by men in her final moments. Her legal counsel had previously argued the procedure would be torturous, citing "small veins" and other medical conditions that complicated lethal injection.
Pike's lawyers have since released a statement accusing the state of failing "once again" to conduct a lawful execution. The statement read, "We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms Pike proved to be true." They further detailed issues such as "Difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy." While confirming Pike was receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, they provided no information on her current condition.
In response, the Tennessee Department of Correction asserted that its staff adhered to state protocol. A state spokesperson commented, "The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening."
