Akpabio's Senate Charges FG: Rescue Abducted Nigerians, Secure Communities

The Nigerian Senate, upon resuming its plenary session on Tuesday, issued a strong call to the Federal Government for enhanced efforts to secure the release of Nigerians held hostage by kidn*ppers and to fortify communities vulnerable to security threats. Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, articulated this demand as the upper legislative chamber reconvened after its annual break, which commenced on July 23, 2026.

Senator Akpabio affirmed that the Senate would leverage its powers of legislation, appropriation, and oversight to confront pressing national challenges, including widespread insecurity, devastating flooding, and the escalating cost of living affecting citizens. He specifically charged the Federal Government and various security agencies to redouble their operations aimed at rescuing abducted Nigerians and safeguarding exposed communities.

He further stated the Senate's commitment to thoroughly review existing security measures and explore additional legislative, budgetary, and oversight interventions to effectively combat insecurity. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Akpabio declared, “So long as a single Nigerian languishes in captivity, a part of Nigeria is itself captive, and this chamber cannot call itself free of the burden.”

The Senate President underscored the imperative for government institutions to shield citizens from security risks, reiterating that the protection of lives remains a fundamental responsibility of the state. He asserted, “We cannot summon citizens to courage and then leave them to face danger alone. Their safety is a charge laid upon us and upon every institution of government, particularly this Nigerian Senate.”

Akpabio continued by stressing that the Senate could not return from its recess and overlook the escalating difficulties faced by Nigerians, noting that the suspension of plenary sessions had not halted the nation's challenges. He remarked, “We adjourned since the 23rd day of July, 2026. The sittings of the Senate ceased in plenary for a season, but the life of Nigeria did not cease.”

He articulated that the true measure of their success should manifest in safer communities, improved livelihoods for all Nigerians, and a stronger nation for both current and future generations.

The Senate President expressed particular apprehension regarding the increasing abduction of Nigerians by various armed groups, stressing that the government's response to their plight must extend beyond mere sympathy. He firmly stated, “Sympathies alone cannot discharge our duties. They are entitled to our attention, our resolve and the full force of our constitutional responsibilities.”
