South African Woman Bags 25-Year Jail Term in Nigeria for 5.75kg Heroin

In Abuja, a Federal High Court has handed down a 25-year prison sentence to Will Jessica Ann, a 38-year-old South African citizen, following her conviction for illegally bringing 5.75kg of heroin into Nigeria. Justice Obiora Egwuatu presided over the case, delivering a 15-year term for the initial charge and a 25-year term for the subsequent charge. These sentences are to run concurrently, ensuring Ann will spend a total of 25 years behind bars.

Ms. Ann admitted her guilt to charges of conspiracy and the illicit importation of drugs. Her arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) occurred on July 6 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. She was apprehended during routine inward customs clearance for Qatar Airways flight QR1433, originating from Doha, while accompanied by her three-year-old son.

According to the NDLEA, investigators discovered two suitcases containing 14 substantial blocks of heroin, totaling 5.75kg. This discovery was made after cross-referencing the baggage tags on the bags with claim tags found with Ann's passport. Initially, Ann disavowed having any checked-in luggage, but she subsequently confessed ownership of the bags, attributing her earlier denial to having forgotten about checking them in.

During the court proceedings, Ann expressed deep regret, asserting that she was unaware of the presence of illegal drugs within her luggage. She further pledged to abstain from similar offenses in the future. In his judgment, Justice Egwuatu emphasized the impartiality of the law, stating that it operates independently of emotional considerations, and famously remarked, “crime does not pay.”

The prosecution had implored the court to factor in the estimated market value of the seized heroin, which was calculated to be approximately ₦18 million per kilogramme. Furthermore, the NDLEA accused Ann of being an accomplice in a transnational drug trafficking syndicate, reportedly operating between Cambodia and South Africa, alongside her husband or partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager. Ann confirmed her involvement in a conspiracy with De Jager, who is currently evading capture.

The court additionally mandated the destruction of the confiscated heroin, contingent on Ann's failure to file an appeal within the legally stipulated timeframe.
