Details emerge: Police Investigate Ekurhuleni Serial K!llings After Ninth Woman's Body Surfaces

Authorities in South Africa announced on Thursday, September 17, the recovery of a ninth female body in a region situated east of Johannesburg. This discovery is potentially connected to an ongoing investigation into a series of murders. The most recent victim was reportedly found partially unclothed and covered in a sheet by the roadside in Dawn Park early Thursday. Her identity remains undisclosed at this time.

This latest incident brings the total number of recovered bodies to nine within the Ekurhuleni municipality, a significant urban hub in Johannesburg, since July 2026. The consistent discovery of these bodies over the past two months has fueled suspicions that a single individual or group may be responsible. Law enforcement had earlier highlighted "sufficiently concerning" similarities in the k!llings of the initial eight victims, prompting them to issue a public safety alert. A common thread among several of the deceased women was being found partially unclothed and bearing various injuries.

Police officials confirmed that the newly found body from early Thursday will be incorporated into the existing investigations concerning the fatalities of women in Ekurhuleni. According to Provincial Police Commissioner Fred Kekana, the body was discovered by a passerby close to a construction site, who then informed the authorities. Kekana described the unidentified woman as appearing to be around 30 years old, with visible stab wounds to her side and what seemed to be a cut throat. The official cause of death is still pending forensic determination.

Commissioner Kekana stated that investigators have not yet conclusively established a link between this recent death and the preceding cases, and he appealed to the public for any relevant information. He also cautioned against the dissemination of graphic images of the bodies or unverified information on social media platforms, emphasizing that such actions induce panic and could potentially incite copycat offenses. A specialized multidisciplinary team, comprising various experts, has been tasked with probing these cases and bringing the culprits to justice.

The victims' remains have been recovered from diverse communities within Ekurhuleni, including Kempton Park, Pomona, Clayville, Olifantsfontein, Rhodesfield, KwaThema, and Dawn Park. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi indicated that law enforcement is actively pursuing leads and making headway in two or three of the cases, though he refrained from disclosing specific details. He implored the public to grant investigators the necessary time to accumulate substantial evidence. Addressing reporters at the scene, Lesufi declared, "They’ve declared war against the state. We’ll respond. We’re not going to surrender."
