63-Year-Old Man Ignites Himself at Google Building, Faces Arson Charges

Full Story
A 63-year-old man, identified as John Butch from Brooklyn, New York, USA, has been apprehended following an incident where he reportedly set himself ablaze inside the reception area of an office complex that hosts Google. Police officials confirmed his arrest on charges including arson.
The incident took place on Friday, August 28, around 3 PM, at 315 Hudson Street, situated near Vandam Street in Lower Manhattan. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Butch allegedly utilized a “lighter accelerant” to ignite himself. He now faces formal charges of arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed Butch entering the building's lobby around 2 PM, leaving, and then returning approximately an hour later. At about 2:58 PM, he was seen using a fluid from his backpack to set himself on fire, resulting in both his body and bag being engulfed in flames.
The dramatic event caused a commotion within the lobby, but quick-thinking building security personnel intervened, using fire extinguishers to douse the flames before the arrival of the FDNY and NYPD. Butch survived the ordeal and was transported by EMS to the burn unit at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he is currently in stable condition. Authorities confirmed that no staff members or bystanders sustained injuries during the incident.
During a search of his personal belongings, investigators discovered a collapsible tactical baton inside his burnt backpack. Questions remain regarding whether Google was the specific target of the act. The 10-storey building is a multi-tenant facility, with Google being the primary occupant. Other tenants include the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau, the New York Society for the Deaf, and various ground-floor retail establishments.
