Dekina APC Boss Gunned Down on Kogi Expressway

Honourable Ishaq Onu Yunusa, who served as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman for Dekina Local Government Area in Kogi State, has tragically lost his life after an attack by unknown gunmen. The incident, which also involved the abduction of another individual, occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, specifically near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.

ASP Afusat Saliu, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, confirmed the unfortunate event in a statement released on Friday, indicating that a comprehensive manhunt has been initiated to track down the perpetrators. According to Saliu, the violent encounter unfolded around 5:00 p.m. when the assailants reportedly emerged from the dense bush flanking the road and began firing indiscriminately at passing vehicles.

Following the ambush, a blue Toyota Corolla, bearing registration number GWA 636 CH, was discovered abandoned on the highway. Inside the vehicle, the lifeless body of Hon. Ishaq Yunusa was found. Reports further indicate that another occupant of the car was forcibly taken into the bush by the attackers.

The police command has since mobilized its personnel, in close collaboration with other security agencies, to thoroughly comb the surrounding forests. Their objective is to secure the release of the kidn*pped victim and ensure the apprehension of those responsible for the heinous crime. The remains of the deceased chairman have been transported to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for an autopsy, while investigators are actively pursuing all available leads.

CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, the Commissioner of Police for Kogi State Command, has issued directives for intensified security operations along the affected route to re-establish public safety and guarantee that justice is served. The Command has also appealed to motorists and residents utilizing the corridor to maintain heightened vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activities or movements to the Police and other security outfits.
