Authorities in Kebbi State have apprehended a 19-year-old female, identified as Khadija Ibrahim, on allegations of abducting a newborn infant to present as her biological child. SP Bashir Usman, who serves as the command's spokesperson, confirmed this development through an official statement issued on August 16th, 2026.

The PPRO stated that the incident transpired on July 23, 2025, within the Zuru Local Government Area. The accused reportedly visited Fatima Muhammad shortly after her delivery, offering help by going to get hot water. It is alleged that the suspect exploited this chance to abscond with the infant instead of bringing back the requested water.

Initial investigations brought to light that Khadija Ibrahim was reportedly experiencing significant social and emotional strain due to her childlessness, especially considering many of her contemporaries had already become mothers. Police sources indicated that she purportedly misled her husband for approximately nine months into thinking she was expecting a baby. Following the birth of Fatima Muhammad’s child, she then allegedly presented the infant to him as their offspring.

The police statement highlighted: "The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested Khadija Ibrahim, female, aged 19, of Rikoto, Zuru LGA, in connection with the alleged theft of a newborn baby in Zuru." It further detailed that the suspect's arrest occurred on August 14th, 2026, after a thorough investigation. The stolen baby has since been located and safely reunited with its biological mother.

Khadija Ibrahim remains in police custody. She is expected to be formally charged in court once investigations are concluded, in line with relevant laws. The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, psc, MNIM, lauded the diligent and professional efforts of the operatives in ensuring the baby's safe return and the suspect's apprehension. He reiterated the Command's commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring that all culpable individuals face justice.
