A devastating maritime disaster has occurred on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, resulting in the loss of 44 lives. The incident happened when an overcrowded ferry, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency, capsized in rough weather. According to the Civil Protection Unit, the ferry was carrying 114 adult passengers, five crew members, and an unspecified number of children, exceeding its capacity of 90 people. The vessel was traveling between the northern town of Kariba and several islands and fishing villages when it sank. A witness, Maxton Kanhema, recounted the horrific scene, stating that the boat left in bad weather and may have been hit by a wave, causing its engines to fail. 'When we were in the waters, then you could see a distress sign and then boats that were close by responded,' Kanhema said. The rescue effort was aided by a national park, which provided a helicopter, as well as bigger boats and divers from the local area and the army. The Zimbabwe Republic Police later updated the death toll, confirming that 44 people had lost their lives in the tragedy. The search for any unaccounted individuals is ongoing, with two funeral parlours engaged to collect the bodies. The 77 people who were rescued were taken to Long Island in the middle of the lake.
