Nigeria Bolsters Forest Security with 9,000 Trained Guards

In a significant move to enhance the security of Nigeria's forests and ungoverned spaces, the Federal Government has expanded the Presidential Forest Guards Initiative. This expansion covers 10 states, with over 9,000 personnel trained to help secure these areas against kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal groups. The Office of the National Security Adviser, in a statement, revealed that the latest phase of the program includes Kaduna, Edo, and Kogi states, where more than 2,000 forest guards have completed their training. These guards are set to be deployed to identified security flashpoints, aiming to improve surveillance and intelligence gathering in these areas. The initiative, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser and implemented under the operational leadership of the Department of State Services, also receives support from the National Intelligence Agency, Defence Headquarters, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Park Service. It is being implemented in partnership with participating state governments to better secure forests, border communities, and other areas exploited by criminal elements. The selection of recruits prioritized individuals from communities heavily affected by kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats, due to their familiarity with the terrain, including forests, footpaths, rivers, and remote settlements. According to the Office of the National Security Adviser, 'The Presidential Forest Guards Initiative has been expanded to 10 states, with over 9,000 personnel trained to help secure forests and other areas used by kidnappers, bandits, and armed groups.' The statement also highlighted that many of the recruits were chosen for their extensive knowledge of the terrain, which is expected to improve surveillance and intelligence gathering, and aid in identifying routes and locations that might be challenging for external personnel to access. All recruits underwent rigorous screening, background checks, and security vetting to confirm their identities and suitability for security duties. The training provided to the personnel covered arms handling, navigation, field craft, patrol operations, intelligence gathering, and forest protection. This comprehensive training is designed to equip the forest guards with the discipline and operational skills required to work within an organized security structure, combining their environmental knowledge with modern security techniques. The initiative aims to restrict the movement of criminal groups through poorly monitored forest corridors, which are often used to establish camps, hide abducted victims, and move undetected across communities and state boundaries. The forest guards are also expected to enhance intelligence sharing between rural communities and conventional security agencies, serving as a vital link between affected communities and security institutions. They will be deployed to forests, remote settlements, border communities, and other areas affected by kidnapping, banditry, and related crimes to support surveillance, early warning efforts, and intelligence-led operations. The governors of Kaduna, Edo, and Kogi states have commended the Office of the National Security Adviser for coordinating the program, acknowledging that it will complement existing security arrangements and extend government presence to areas with limited conventional security coverage. The broader objective of the Presidential Forest Guards Initiative, launched by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025, is to restore government presence in vulnerable areas, protect rural communities, and prevent criminal groups from using Nigeria's forests as safe havens.
