Five-Year-Old Boy's Escape Exposes 'Hell House' in Pennsylvania; Three Guardians Arrested

A distressing incident in Pennsylvania has led to the arrest of three adults following the escape of a five-year-old boy who reportedly spent most of his young life confined to a room filled with faeces. The unclothed child, whose identity has not been released, was discovered wandering alone on a street in his Swatara Township neighbourhood around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, as reported by the Pennsylvania State Police.
Good Samaritans, concerned for the boy's welfare, stopped him. He was only wrapped in a green, urine-stained blanket. They stayed with him until emergency responders arrived and transported him to a local hospital for urgent medical assessment, WGAL reported. The exact circumstances of how the boy managed to escape from the residence remain unclear.
Authorities traced the child back to a house located a few blocks from where he was found. Inside, officers described uncovering a horrific scene akin to a "nightmarish hell hole." Police reports indicate the residence was in a hoarder-like state, "with trash throughout, hundreds of flies observed and limited room for maneuvering the house because of the influx of clutter."
One particular bedroom was identified as the boy's. Its door was equipped with a baby gate, further reinforced with multiple zip ties, duct tape, and wooden boards drilled from the exterior frame, all designed to prevent the boy from leaving. Investigations revealed the child spent approximately 90 percent of his time locked in this boarded-up room. His meals, consisting of granola bars, cereal, juice, milk, and water, were passed to him through the slots of the baby gate, according to WGAL.
The three adults found inside the home were identified as Tucker Heagy, 20; Jade Shuey, 21; and Stephanie Schaffner, 42. They were reportedly the boy's guardians, though their specific relationship to him was not disclosed. It was alleged that they bathed the boy only once a week, sometimes extending the period between cleanings to over a week.
Shuey informed the police that the boy could be left in the room for up to three days without being let out, compelling him to relieve himself within the room's confines and spread faeces on the walls. Heagy confessed that releasing the boy from the room required cutting five to ten zip ties from the gates, which would then be replaced with new ties and duct tape each time. The adults reportedly purchased these fasteners in bulk from a local store due to their frequent use.
The appalling and unsanitary conditions within the home led town code enforcement to condemn the property. Heagy, Shuey, and Schaffner have all been taken into custody and charged with one count each of endangering the welfare of children, police confirmed.
