Kano Court Remands Young Woman Over Co-Wife's Alleged Murder

A 20-year-old woman, identified as Safiya Hussaini, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a Chief Magistrates' Court in Kano State. The court's decision was made after Hussaini was arraigned on a charge of culpable homicide, following the alleged murder of her co-wife. According to the prosecution, the incident occurred in Loko town, Takai Local Government Area of Kano State, where Hussaini and the deceased were co-wives. The first information report (FIR) revealed that Hussaini had engaged in a dispute with her co-wife, which escalated into a violent attack using a cutlass, resulting in the co-wife's death. When the charge was read to her, the prosecution informed the court that it lacked the jurisdiction to try offences relating to culpable homicide and requested an adjournment to seek legal advice from the state ministry of justice. Chief Magistrate Auwal Yusuf Sulaiman granted the application and adjourned the case for two weeks, ordering that Hussaini be remanded in a correctional centre pending further proceedings.
