Abuja Court Delivers Death Sentence to Three Terrorists for Heinous Crimes

In a landmark judgment, the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three terrorists to death by hanging for their roles in various terrorist activities. The sentences were handed down by Justices James Omotosho and Salim Ibrahim, following the guilty pleas entered by the convicts. Danladi Lawal, also known as Dankawu, was sentenced to death by hanging for his involvement in the abduction and detention of an elderly man, as well as for receiving part of the ransom proceeds. Lawal, 33, pleaded guilty to the five-count charge preferred against him by the Federal Government, with the offences including unlawful abduction, intimidation of the public, and receiving ransom proceeds. The Federal Government, through the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, had charged Lawal with the offences, which are contrary to the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act 2013. In a separate judgment, Justice Ibrahim sentenced Abdullahi Mohammed and Mohammed Gulama Shaibu to death by hanging after they pleaded guilty to the charges filed against them. The court also sentenced other convicts to various prison terms, including life imprisonment and 20-year jail terms, for their roles in terrorist activities. The judgments are part of the ongoing mass trial of terrorists at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the aim of bringing perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice. Justice Emeka Nwite also sentenced Lawi Abubakar Mohammed to a 40-year prison term, with the option of rehabilitation and deradicalization before release. The judgments demonstrate the commitment of the Nigerian judiciary to combating terrorism and ensuring that those who engage in such activities are held accountable for their actions.
