Foster Mother Accused of Swapping Child for Exotic Pet in Shocking Abuse Case

A disturbing case of child abuse has come to light in the United States, where a 70-year-old foster mother, Brenda Deutsch, has been accused of trading her foster daughter for a pet monkey after subjecting the child to years of physical, emotional, and mental abuse. The allegations against Deutsch were first reported to the Department of Social Services in November 2024 by an anonymous source, who claimed that a child was being abused by her foster mother in Troy, Missouri. Following this tip, police made contact with the victim in December 2024, and the child detailed a harrowing account of three years of abuse at the hands of Deutsch. According to the victim, Deutsch used a paddle to strike her, smacked her, and also physically abused other family members. Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wood described the abuse as 'emotional abuse, physical abuse, and also a level of neglect' inflicted upon the child. Wood further explained that the abuse included 'emotional abuse such as throwing their clothes away' and 'taking them to have them evaluated for psychological issues, whether they have it or not, as a level of control.' The investigation into the abuse was prompted in part by the victim's school, which reported excessive absences in February 2025. It was discovered that the child was not in Missouri, as expected, but was instead living in Texas. Authorities were able to locate the child in Texas and learned that she was in the care of a friend of Deutsch, with whom Deutsch allegedly had a mutual interest in exotic animals. A witness claimed that Deutsch had traded the foster child for a monkey, a shocking allegation that underscores the depth of the abuse. The person caring for the child in Texas would often leave the house for extended periods to tend to their animals, including a 10-day trip to New Mexico, during which time the child was sent to live with another person. According to Wood, this secondary home was the residence of the adult children of a witness, both of whom are disabled and unable to care for the child, leaving the child to care for them. Deutsch has been charged with two counts of abuse or neglect of a child and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, marking a significant step towards justice for the victim.
