Niger State Govt Urges Calm, Dismisses Bandit Invasion Reports

The Niger State Government has moved to allay the fears of its residents regarding the purported invasion of bandits in the state capital and its environs. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nana, on Thursday, the government assured residents that the state remains safe and secure for all activities, including teaching and learning. This reassurance comes on the heels of reports circulating on social media platforms alleging that bandits had invaded certain schools in areas such as Bosso, Kpakungu, Sabon-Wuse, and Lambata, leading to the abduction of pupils, students, and teachers. However, according to Nana, these reports are entirely false and misleading, aimed at creating unnecessary fear and panic among the populace. The Ministry of Information and Orientation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Niger State Police Command, and other relevant security agencies, has conducted security assessments and independent verifications, which have confirmed that the alleged incidents did not occur. As such, the government is urging parents, guardians, and the general public to remain calm and continue with their normal activities, including sending their children to school. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of all students, teachers, and members of school communities, and is working closely with security agencies and stakeholders to strengthen the security architecture around educational institutions across the state. Furthermore, the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, has directed Divisional Police Officers to work in tandem with school administrators to ensure the safety of students, staff, and host communities through enhanced police visibility patrols and school protection initiatives. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, has also provided telephone numbers for the public to contact the command in case of any security concerns or suspicious activities. With these measures in place, the government is confident that the state will continue to be a safe haven for all residents, and has encouraged everyone to go about their daily activities without fear.
