Obi-Kwankwaso Alliance Sparks Debate, VIO Powers Under Scrutiny

Nigerians are abuzz with the potential alliance between former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as the 2027 elections draw near. However, this proposed coalition is facing resistance from some northern stakeholders, who are questioning the viability and power-sharing arrangements of such a union. According to reports, some northern leaders have begun to caution their followers against Obi and Kwankwaso, portraying them as anti-northern interests. In some parts of the north, Obi and Kwankwaso's campaign posters were reportedly set ablaze by angry youths. Furthermore, a member of the Kano State House of Assembly, Muhammad Tomas, who had recently defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has returned to the All Progressives Congress. In another development, a Court of Appeal ruling has sparked controversy over the powers of Vehicle Inspection Officers. The appellate court upheld a previous judgment, which stated that VIO officials in the Federal Capital Territory lack the authority to stop vehicles, impound them, or impose fines on motorists. However, the Lagos State Government has clarified that this judgment does not apply to Lagos, as the state has its own transport laws that empower its Vehicle Inspection Service. In the political arena, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Joe Igbokwe, has alleged that the recent mob attack he faced in Lagos was politically motivated. Igbokwe stated that he was not physically attacked, but the hostility directed at him was likely due to his political affiliation and outspoken views on national issues. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is also facing criticism over the killing of 16-year-old Sesugh Atser, who was a suspect in a cyber fraud case. The commission has provided an account of the events leading to Sesugh's death, stating that he and two other suspects had escaped from custody before being recaptured. In a separate incident, the abductors of a former Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, and his wife have demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations in exchange for the couple's freedom.
