A 35-year-old mother, Jennifer Atsar, has shared her heartbreaking story of losing her 16-year-old son, Sesugh, who was allegedly murdered by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi on May 23, 2026. Atsar, who sells garri to take care of her five children, explained that her son was learning furniture-making and attending school at the New Educational Teaching Academic College, Makurdi, before his tragic death. According to her, Sesugh was arrested by the EFCC, released, and then killed while on bail. The EFCC had accused Sesugh of being involved in fraud, having an OPay account, and disguising himself as a lady on Facebook. However, Atsar believes these allegations were fabricated to justify her son's killing. She demands justice for her son and wants the officer who shot him to face the consequences. Atsar also wants the EFCC to release her son's corpse so that he can rest in peace. The EFCC has neither met with Atsar nor sent her any message since the incident. Sesugh's death has left his family and community in shock, with many attesting to his good character. Atsar's appeal to the government is to ensure that her son's killer is punished and that justice is served. She also wants the EFCC to release her son's corpse so that he can be given a proper burial. The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the need for accountability and transparency in their operations.
