The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a middle-aged man, Adamu Abdullahi, who allegedly staged his own kidnap in a bid to extort N1.5 million from his employer. According to the State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, the incident began on May 19 when one Abubakar reported to the police that his brother, Adamu Abdullahi, was missing. Following the report, a video surfaced showing the purported victim being beaten and threatened with death unless a ransom of N1.5 million was paid. However, upon careful analysis of the video and subsequent investigation, detectives noticed inconsistencies, as there were no visible signs of physical assault on the alleged victim after his return home. The suspect was subjected to further interrogation and eventually confessed that the kidnap was staged in collaboration with one Adelowo Olalekan Akorede, aged 35, and one Yusuf Lukman, aged 39, as well as another accomplice who is currently at large. The investigation further revealed that the suspects intended to fraudulently obtain money from the victim's employer, Lawal Abubakar, who regularly entrusted him with funds for scrap iron business transactions. The police boss also mentioned that the suspect confessed to diverting the sum of N490,000 previously entrusted to him for business purposes, which has since been recovered. The workshop used for recording the fake kidnap video was also visited during the investigation, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice.
