Ooni of Ife Bestows 'Babatunde' Name on NBA Star Jaylen Brown

Addressing Brown directly, the Ooni declared, “This is to certify that you have been officially issued Babatunde as your traditional and ancestral name. Henceforth, you shall be known as Babatunde Jaylen Brown.” Oba Ogunwusi further expressed his belief that this ancestral designation would usher in good fortune for Brown and deepen his ties to his Yoruba heritage.

The traditional ruler highlighted Ile-Ife’s profound historical and spiritual significance, describing it as the very heart of Yoruba civilization and ancestral legacy. He reflected on how the historical trauma of slavery and forced migration had tragically fragmented families and communities with shared ancestral origins across both Africa and its diaspora. According to Oba Ogunwusi, the palace serves as a custodian of generations of ancestral narratives, royal lineages, cultural practices, and various other facets of Yoruba heritage.
