On Monday, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, extended a grand welcome to American basketball sensation Jaylen Brown at his palace. During the visit, the revered monarch officially conferred upon Brown the significant traditional Yoruba name, “Babatunde.” Brown, a prominent player for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association, was graciously received by the Ooni, who was accompanied by several other traditional rulers and palace dignitaries for the star's visit to the ancient city.

In a statement released by his Senior Media Officer, Sodiq Lawal, Oba Ogunwusi clarified that the name “Babatunde” translates to “the father has returned” or “ancestor has returned.” The Ooni emphasized that this name represents Brown’s ancestral identity, thereby formally establishing a connection between the basketball professional and his Yoruba heritage and roots. Addressing Brown directly, the Ooni declared, “This is to certify that you have been officially issued Babatunde as your traditional and ancestral name. Henceforth, you shall be known as Babatunde Jaylen Brown.” Oba Ogunwusi further expressed his belief that this ancestral designation would usher in good fortune for Brown and deepen his ties to his Yoruba heritage.

The traditional ruler highlighted Ile-Ife’s profound historical and spiritual significance, describing it as the very heart of Yoruba civilization and ancestral legacy. He reflected on how the historical trauma of slavery and forced migration had tragically fragmented families and communities with shared ancestral origins across both Africa and its diaspora. The Ooni passionately appealed to individuals of African descent, particularly those residing in the diaspora, to seek reconnection with their ancestral origins. He noted that Brown's visit presented an invaluable chance for him to re-establish ties with his heritage and absorb lessons from centuries of meticulously preserved ancestral history.

According to Oba Ogunwusi, the palace serves as a custodian of generations of ancestral narratives, royal lineages, cultural practices, and various other facets of Yoruba heritage. He extended an invitation to Africans globally, encouraging them to visit Ile-Ife and other sites linked to their ancestry, thereby enhancing their grasp of history. Such pilgrimages, he stated, would foster a deeper appreciation for African culture, identity, and heritage among people worldwide.

In his response, Jaylen Brown conveyed his sincere gratitude to the Ooni for the exceptionally warm welcome and hospitality he received throughout his stay. The NBA star remarked that the experience allowed him to gain deeper insights into his own heritage, and he, in turn, encouraged others to explore and connect with their ancestral roots.
