Lagos State Starts 2026 Parking Permit Enforcement; Defaulters Risk Fines

The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has announced the commencement of enforcing its 2026 parking permit regulations across all operational zones within the state. The agency issued a stern warning to those who fail to comply, indicating that they will face significant financial penalties and immediate suspension of their operations.

Adebisi Adelabu, the General Manager of LASPA, conveyed this development in a statement released on Tuesday via the state government's official page. She emphasized that this enforcement marks the conclusion of an extensive grace period previously extended to customers, allowing them ample time to formalize their activities and secure their 2026 parking permits. Adelabu explained that the purpose of this extension was to provide affected individuals and businesses with sufficient opportunity to meet their obligations and adhere to the authority's requirements.

The LASPA General Manager highlighted that the enforcement initiative aims to ensure adherence to established parking regulations, foster accountability, and enhance the overall management of parking operations throughout Lagos. She further noted that the exercise would contribute to compliance with transport sector laws and streamline parking administration statewide.

Adelabu expressed concern over the reluctance of many customers to obtain their 2026 parking permits, despite numerous appeals, direct communications, reminders, and the prolonged grace period. She reiterated: “The commencement of the enforcement marks the end of the prolonged grace period granted to customers to regularise their activities and obtain their 2026 parking permits.”

Earlier, LASPA had disseminated the 2026 Demand Notices to all registered customers, clearly outlining the applicable fees, necessary requirements, and procedures for obtaining the permits. Adelabu strongly advised customers who have not yet regularized their operations to promptly fulfill their obligations to avoid sanctions for ongoing non-compliance.

The General Manager underscored that the enforcement action is not intended to penalize operators but rather to restore order and instill accountability within the state's parking framework. According to her: “The enforcement exercise is not intended to be punitive, but a necessary measure to restore order, accountability, and efficiency within Lagos’ parking ecosystem.”

Adelabu clarified that possessing valid parking permits and maintaining accurate customer records are crucial for LASPA to effectively plan, monitor, regulate, and manage the state's parking infrastructure and services. She stated: “Valid parking permits and accurate customer records are essential to enable LASPA to effectively plan, monitor, regulate, and manage parking infrastructure and services across the State.”

The LASPA boss warned that customers who default on the 2026 Demand Notices will incur severe penalties, which include substantial fines and the immediate suspension of their operations. These sanctions, she confirmed, would be imposed in strict accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. She concluded by stating: “Defaulting customers on the 2026 Demand Notices would be liable to severe penalties, including substantial fines and immediate suspension of operations, in accordance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.”

Adelabu assured customers of the availability of LASPA personnel to offer assistance and guidance, including support for utilizing the authority’s online payment and registration portals. She also reaffirmed LASPA’s dedication to developing an efficient and sustainable parking system for Lagos residents, businesses, and visitors. Finally, she urged the public to cooperate with enforcement officers during this exercise and to report any unauthorized parking activities to the authority.
