Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has revealed that Nigeria is making substantial progress towards its ambitious target of attracting $1 billion in monthly remittance inflows. This announcement comes after a new peak of $947 million was recorded in July 2026 for funds channelled through International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs).

This July figure represents the highest monthly remittance sum ever processed via formal channels, bringing the country within close proximity of the $1 billion monthly milestone initially established by the CBN under Governor Cardoso’s leadership.

Furthermore, the total remittance inflows received through IMTOs during the first seven months of 2026 amounted to $3.8 billion. This marks a significant 50.2 percent increase compared to the $2.5 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

The nation's apex bank, in an official statement, attributed this positive development to a series of reforms it has implemented. These measures were designed to enhance the competitiveness, transparency, and accessibility of official remittance corridors.

Among the key policy adjustments were the adoption of a more market-driven exchange rate system, revisions to the regulatory framework governing IMTOs, and the introduction of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN). The CBN also intensified its engagement with IMTOs, commercial banks, and Nigerian diaspora communities worldwide.

More recently, the CBN further strengthened its requirements, mandating that all remittance transactions must be routed through designated settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks.

The significance of these growing figures extends beyond mere numerical achievements. An increase in diaspora flows through formal channels substantially boosts foreign exchange liquidity and transparency within the economy. This, in turn, provides crucial support for households and investments, while simultaneously strengthening Nigeria's external financing position.

Governor Cardoso remarked, “When we set a clear ambition to reach $1 billion a month in remittance inflows through formal channels nearly two years ago, some people thought we were dreaming. At $947 million in July, we are now approaching that milestone.”

The CBN clarified that while individual monthly figures may naturally fluctuate, its primary focus remains on the broader trajectory and on sustaining the shift towards formal remittance pathways. The considerable rise in inflows observed throughout 2026 underscores the increasing effectiveness of the reforms, which were specifically crafted to ensure formal remittance channels are more competitive, easily accessible, and transparent.

To build on this positive momentum, the CBN plans to deepen its engagement with Nigerian diaspora communities and key financial sector partners operating across major remittance corridors. As part of its wider international outreach, the bank affirmed its commitment to leveraging opportunities in prominent global financial hubs. The goal is to interact with diaspora communities, IMTOs, banks, and other relevant stakeholders to reduce friction, widen access, and ultimately channel a larger proportion of remittance funds through official avenues.

Cardoso further elaborated, “July is an important marker, but our focus is not on a single month. It is on creating the conditions for sustained growth in formal remittances. We expect to keep seeing improvement and believe Nigeria can reach and ultimately sustain monthly inflows above $1 billion.”
