EXCLUSIVE(TRENDS.GOOGLE): Leaked Diagnostics Log Reveals iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera Details

A recent leak of internal documents from Tata Electronics, courtesy of the ransomware group World Leaks, has shed more light on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max. Specifically, a diagnostics log has confirmed speculation about the device's camera specifications, including a new main sensor with variable aperture support. According to the log, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a Sony IMX905 main sensor, replacing the one used in its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Notably, the pixel size remains unchanged at 1.22μm, suggesting that the upgrade is primarily focused on the addition of variable aperture rather than an increase in sensor size. The diagnostics log also details the presence of a calibration block that reads actuator data tied to the aperture mechanism from the sensor's non-volatile memory, further confirming the variable aperture support. This feature, while not new to the smartphone industry, marks a first for iPhone devices. The rest of the camera array, including the telephoto, ultrawide, LiDAR receiver, and selfie cameras, appears to remain unchanged from the previous model, with the telephoto sensor utilizing 0.7μm native pixels that bin up to 1.4μm, and stabilization provided by a 3-axis spherical actuator for gimbal-style OIS. Apple has not commented on the leak. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to launch in September 2026, alongside other models in the iPhone 18 lineup. There are indications that the price of the Pro Max may increase by an average of $200, partly due to higher production costs for the camera and memory. As the launch date approaches, more details about the device's specifications and pricing are likely to emerge.
