Vini Jr: Referees Must Protect Attacking Players Like Yamal, Álvarez

Full Story
Real Madrid's prolific forward, Vinícius Jr., has openly advocated for enhanced protection for attacking players on the football pitch, specifically mentioning himself, Barcelona's young talent Lamine Yamal, and Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez as prime examples requiring better officiating. The Brazilian international voiced his deep dissatisfaction with what he perceives as unjust treatment during matches, asserting that defenders frequently commit fouls against him, yet he often finds himself receiving bookings from the referee.
According to a report shared by football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X on Thursday, Vinícius Jr. was quoted expressing his sentiments: “I feel like defenders can always kick me, yet I am the one who gets booked.” The influential Real Madrid player further underscored the critical importance of safeguarding footballers who possess the ability to turn the tide in games, highlighting Yamal and Álvarez alongside his own contributions. He added, “I think we need to protect players who can make a difference like me, Lamine Yamal and Julián Álvarez.”
Vinícius also raised questions regarding the appropriateness of disciplinary sanctions in certain scenarios, citing a four-match suspension handed out for an incident involving pulling an opponent's hair. “I do not remember any player being banned for four games for pulling the opponent’s hair,” he remarked. The forward believes he is frequently subjected to criticism from opposing clubs and the media, implying that similar incidents involving him are occasionally handled with a different degree of scrutiny.
Reflecting on his journey with Real Madrid, Vinícius Jr. also took the opportunity to remind his detractors of the significant progress he has achieved since joining the club as an 18-year-old. He stated, “Remember, I arrived at 18 years old and many people laughed at me. They said I can’t score, then I had more than 100 goals for Madrid.” The attacker maintained that his accomplishments at the Spanish giants are self-evident, pointing to the numerous titles he has secured during his tenure. He concluded his statement with a defiant declaration to those who continue to cast doubts on his capabilities: “Vini always comes back, remember.”
