Christian Eriksen Departs Wolfsburg Following June Health Scare, Prioritises Family

German club VfL Wolfsburg confirmed on Wednesday that they have reached a mutual agreement with midfielder Christian Eriksen to end his contract. This decision comes after the 34-year-old footballer experienced a collapse on the pitch during an international friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine in June. In July, Eriksen had indicated his intention to go back to his native country for a rehabilitation program.

It is notable that he had previously suffered a cardiac arrest in 2021, during Denmark’s first Euro 2020 group stage game against Finland, which took place in Copenhagen. In an Instagram post, Eriksen shared, “I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family. As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021. I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started.”

He continued, expressing gratitude: “In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years.” Eriksen further added, “Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it. For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”

This mutual termination concludes Eriksen’s contract with Wolfsburg, which was originally scheduled to run until June 2027. The Danish midfielder had joined the Wolves as a free agent just a year prior, making a total of 34 appearances across various competitions. During his time with the club, Eriksen contributed three goals and ten assists, although his efforts were ultimately insufficient to save Wolfsburg from relegation from the Bundesliga.
