Al-Nassr Coach Postecoglou Reveals Ronaldo's Mid-Game Exit Reason

Ange Postecoglou, the manager for Saudi club Al-Nassr, has shed light on why he decided to remove star player Cristiano Ronaldo from the pitch at half-time. This occurred during the team's impressive turnaround win against Al-Ettifaq, a match that saw Al-Nassr trail by two goals and play with ten men.

Ronaldo, aged 41, was making his initial appearance in the starting lineup since the World Cup, yet he was withdrawn during the interval. The Portuguese star visibly showed his displeasure upon exiting the field, making a questioning gesture with his arms towards the technical area.

Despite Ronaldo's apparent frustration, Postecoglou's tactical move proved successful as Al-Nassr mounted an extraordinary recovery in the second half. Sadio Mane and Abdulelah Al Amri netted goals in quick succession, within a three-minute span, to equalize for the reigning Saudi Pro League champions. Mane then secured the 3-2 triumph with another goal in extra time.

According to a Wednesday report by BBC Sport, Postecoglou clarified his rationale, stating his conviction that the players brought on at the half-time mark possessed the ability to significantly influence the game given the prevailing conditions. He was quoted saying, “When I made the substitutions, including taking Ronaldo off, I believed the players coming on could make an impact.”

The Australian coach highlighted that each player introduced as a substitute played a crucial and positive role in orchestrating the comeback. He further stated, “I came here to help the players, so as I said, I’m proud of them because every substitute made a positive contribution.”

Even though he opted to substitute him, Postecoglou still commended Ronaldo's performance during the initial half. He explained, “I’m here to help the team with what I see, and everyone knows that Ronaldo hasn’t played in a long time.” He concluded by saying, “He performed exceptionally well in the first half, and we opted for a different approach.”

This win ensured Al-Nassr maintained their flawless start to the current season, having secured three victories from three games, which propelled them to the summit of the Saudi Pro League standings. Postecoglou assumed leadership of Al-Nassr just last month, following his previous stints managing Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, this particular match unfolds during what many speculate could be the concluding season of his distinguished playing career. The celebrated five-time Ballon d’Or recipient has hinted at a probable retirement post-campaign, driven by a desire to devote more time to his family.
