Spurs Break Bank: £75m Savinho Transfer from Man City Finalized

Tottenham Hotspur has officially sealed the transfer of Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City, with reports indicating an initial fee of £75 million ($102 million). This significant acquisition now pushes Spurs' total spending in the current transfer window beyond the £300 million mark.

The 22-year-old forward, despite spending two seasons at Manchester City, struggled to secure a regular first-team spot. However, Tottenham is banking on his pace and creative flair to invigorate their attack, especially after their narrow escape from Premier League relegation last season.

Expressing his delight in a statement released by Tottenham, Savinho said, “It’s taken a while, but I’m very happy to be here. It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world. As soon as I spoke to the head coach, I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”

Manager Roberto De Zerbi’s influence was crucial in the latter part of the previous season, preventing Spurs from dropping into the second tier of English football for the first time in 49 years. Despite this, De Zerbi’s ambitious overhaul of the Tottenham squad encountered a challenging start, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the Premier League's opening weekend.

Savinho joins a roster of expensive new faces, including Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Jan Paul van Hecke. Additionally, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Martin Dubravka have arrived on free transfers.

De Zerbi lauded his new signing, stating, “Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity. We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

Manchester City stands to gain an additional £10 million in potential add-ons from the deal. Further transfer activity between the two clubs is anticipated, with Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush also expected to move from Manchester to North London before the transfer window closes next week.

Savinho initially joined City from Troyes, a club within the City Football Group network, for £30 million in 2024. He gained significant attention during a successful loan spell at Girona, another City Football Group affiliate, but has yet to replicate that form since arriving in England. During his 84 appearances for City, Savinho managed to score only seven goals, a period during which City reportedly missed out on Premier League and Champions League glory in Pep Guardiola’s final two seasons at the helm.
