Mourinho Opens Up on Real Madrid Exit, Citing Squad Issues

José Mourinho, the renowned Portuguese football manager, has shed light on the factors that led to his departure from Real Madrid in 2013. During his initial three-year stint at the Spanish club, which began in 2010, Mourinho achieved a notable La Liga title in 2012, thus ending Barcelona's dominance in the domestic scene. However, the team's inability to secure European success in the UEFA Champions League, coupled with underlying squad mentality issues, contributed to his eventual exit. In a recent Netflix docuseries, Mourinho reflected on his early interactions with then-captain Iker Casillas, highlighting the players' preferred arrangements, such as additional vacation time for national team players and altered training schedules. He noted that the players were 'in a very poor state' mentally. The breakdown in relationships between Mourinho and the players, as well as intense media scrutiny, ultimately led to his decision to leave the club. As he recounted, 'I believe the players had grown weary of me as a leader, and I felt the same towards them. I was frustrated with them, not just the other way around. I was fed up with the players and the media. I wanted to leave. I sensed that my time was up.' Following his departure from Real Madrid, Mourinho went on to manage several prominent clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and AS Roma, before returning to the Spanish capital for his second managerial spell.
