In a move that is set to bolster their goalkeeping department, Manchester City have announced the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from French club Marseille. The 34-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract and will serve as the backup to Italian shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Rulli expressed his excitement about the move, stating, 'This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp. When the chance to join Manchester City comes along, you have to go for it.' He added, 'Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City's success over a long time has been impressive. Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards.' Rulli, who has eight caps for Argentina, was part of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America. He also played in the World Cup final last month, where Argentina lost to Spain. The experienced goalkeeper has played for several European clubs, including Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier, and Ajax. Notably, he scored a penalty in Villarreal's 2021 Europa League final victory over Manchester United and then denied David de Gea to claim the trophy 11-10 in the shootout. Rulli's move to Manchester City comes as Marseille looks to balance its books after being fined 10 million euros for failing to meet UEFA's break-even targets. The French club has already parted ways with some of its high earners, including English forward Mason Greenwood and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. On Tuesday, Marseille announced the departure of another Argentine player, defender Facundo Medina, to Bayer Leverkusen after just one season with the club.
