The leaders of UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have expressed their deep disappointment and frustration with FIFA president Gianni Infantino over his handling of plans to sell a stake in the World Cup. In a joint statement, the three confederations accused FIFA of a 'fundamental breach of trust' and 'deception', stating that the episode raises serious questions about the integrity of football's leadership. The statement, which was signed by the heads of the confederations, described the process as a 'profound failure of judgment' and accused Infantino of acting like someone who 'believes the game is answerable to him.' The confederations took issue with the fact that the proposal to create FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a company to run the commercial and operational aspects of FIFA's tournaments, was advanced on a compressed timeline without meaningful consultation. They argued that this was not an oversight, but rather a design intended to limit scrutiny. The statement also criticized FIFA's decision to present a full report on these events to the FIFA Council, rather than conducting an independent review. The confederations have urged FIFA to hold an independent review into Infantino's scheme, stating that 'leadership in football is not a possession' and that it is a 'duty of service to the football family that entrusts it.' The backlash against Infantino has been so severe that the three confederations have held initial talks about organizing competitions themselves. UEFA has previously threatened a boycott of FIFA competitions, and it is understood that the decision to hold preliminary discussions with AFC and CONCACAF about coordinating their own tournaments is to ensure that players under their jurisdictions have meaningful opportunities to compete.
