Despite West Ham United's recent relegation from the Premier League, club captain Jarrod Bowen has affirmed his decision to remain with the team as they prepare for the upcoming Championship season. The 29-year-old England international, a vital attacking presence, had his future at the London Stadium cast into doubt following the Hammers' demotion on the final day of the previous campaign.

Bowen, who arrived at West Ham from Hull City in 2020, has made 280 appearances for the club, netting an impressive 85 goals. He took on the captain's armband in 2024, following the departure of Kurt Zouma. Although he boasts 22 caps for England, he was notably left out of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer.

This news serves as a significant morale boost for West Ham, who are now commencing their pre-season activities for their first stint in the Championship since the 2011-12 season. Bowen, a pivotal figure in the Hammers' frontline, featured in every Premier League match last season, contributing nine goals. He famously sealed West Ham’s first major trophy in 43 years by scoring the winning goal in the final minute against Fiorentina during the 2023 UEFA Conference League final held in Prague.

While speculations linked him with a potential return to the Premier League this summer, Bowen has now committed his allegiance to the club for the 2026-27 season. His current contract is valid until 2030, and no new extension has been signed at this time.

Speaking to the Hammers’ official website, Bowen articulated his dedication: "My main motivation is staying and bringing this club back to the Premier League where we belong." He added, "It was only right for me to speak at the right time. Ultimately it [relegation] hurt everyone and it should hurt everyone." Bowen further revealed that a meeting with club directors Daniel Kretinsky and Jiri Svarc in Prague solidified his decision, citing their shared ambition for the club's future direction. "It didn't take a lot, because this club means a lot to me," he stated, emphasizing his deep connection. He elaborated on his journey, saying, "I've been here six and a half years and transitioned from a boy to a man and I've never tried to hide away from anything." Bowen concluded by expressing his identity as a West Ham fan and captain: "I always try and stand up for them and just kind of live my life as captain of West Ham and also as a fan as well."

Bowen will continue his pre-season preparations under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, whose own retention at the club was confirmed in May. West Ham's competitive season will commence with a home Carabao Cup fixture against Portsmouth, followed by their Championship opener away at fellow relegated side Burnley on Sunday, August 16, at 16:00 BST.
