Tragedy Strikes Florida Beach as Lightning Claims One Life

A devastating incident occurred on Friday, July 3, at Fort Myers Beach in Florida, where a group of beachgoers were struck by lightning while swimming in the Gulf. The incident, which happened around 3 p.m., resulted in the death of one person and left three others injured. According to Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District Chief Scott Wirth, the deceased, an unidentified man, was directly struck by the lightning and died. Three other swimmers who were wading in the ocean near the strike were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. Sarah Rodriguez of the Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the three injured individuals are in stable condition. Witnesses described the terrifying moment, with beachgoer Debra Crombie telling WINK News that 'it sounded like an atomic bomb went off.' Crombie, who was on vacation with her family, said the lightning strike was so intense that it blinded their eyes and hurt their ears. She also recalled seeing kids running off the beach, screaming, after the incident. Crombie believes the deceased was staying at her resort with his family and expressed her condolences, saying 'my heart just breaks for them.' The man who was directly struck was pulled from the water, and CPR measures were attempted, but he had died by the time emergency responders arrived at the scene.
