Accidental Rifle Discharge Claims Immigration Officer's Life in Abuja

Joseph Ali, an officer serving with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has tragically passed away in Abuja following an accidental discharge from a locally fabricated rifle he was holding. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the Compensation Layout of Old Kutunku, Abuja, saw the firearm strike Mr. Ali in his left eye.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, the unfortunate event unfolded as Officer Ali was getting ready to depart his home for work. A distress call was promptly made from the vicinity after the immigration official was involved in the accidental shooting.
Sources indicate that Mr. Ali had already dressed for duty and was in the process of preparing to leave when he picked up the locally made rifle. This weapon was reportedly used by him for community security purposes, and he intended to put it away before heading out. However, it is alleged that he was unaware the firearm was already cocked. As he handled the rifle, it unexpectedly discharged, with the pellets hitting him directly in the left eye. This happened in the presence of his wife and children.
Following the incident, Joseph Ali was immediately transported to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH). Upon examination by a duty doctor, he was confirmed deceased. His body has since been moved to the hospital's mortuary, awaiting an autopsy.
