with Public Holiday — Borno State Celebrates New Islamic Year

In a move to commemorate the start of the Islamic calendar year 1448, the Borno State Government has announced that Tuesday will be observed as a public holiday. According to the Islamic calendar, which is based on lunar cycles, the year 1448 AH overlaps with parts of both the 2026 and 2027 Gregorian calendar years. As a result, the first day of Muharram 1448 AH falls on Tuesday, 16th June 2026. In a statement issued on Sunday, the state's Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, encouraged residents to utilize this period to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful coexistence, service to humanity, and the development of the state. The commissioner quoted the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, as saying that all citizens should be faithful and reflect on the significance of this date, rededicating themselves to the values of unity, solidarity, and multiculturalism that are essential for unity in diversity. Governor Zulum also urged the people of the state to pray for a peaceful and harmonious society, calling on all communities and faith groups to live in harmony and togetherness. The government of Borno State has reiterated its commitment to the unity, prosperity, and existence of Nigeria, and to projecting a positive image of the country among the global community.
