Acclaimed Writer Blanche d’Alpuget, Bob Hawke's Widow, Passes Away at 82

The Australian literary landscape is mourning the loss of Blanche d’Alpuget, a celebrated author and the widow of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, who has died at the age of 82. Her family confirmed her passing, attributing it to complications arising from influenza, as reported by ABC News on Wednesday.

Known for her compelling biographies, novels, and insightful essays, d’Alpuget left a poignant final message for her loved ones to share: "Our highest calling and greatest achievement is love, the rule of life. Love one another." Her family's statement described her as an individual who embraced life fearlessly and found immense joy in living. They added, "We will miss her force, her humour, her curiosity and her love beyond measure."

D’Alpuget is survived by her son, Louis Pratt, from her initial marriage, her granddaughter Sienna, along with three step-children and numerous step-grandchildren from her union with Hawke. Born an only child in Sydney's eastern suburbs, her early career saw her delve into journalism before embarking on extensive travels and residing in various countries including England, France, Indonesia, and Malaysia. She returned to Australia at 30, where she commenced her career as a novelist, frequently exploring themes of power and politics in her works. Her 1977 biography of Sir Richard Kirby, a distinguished Australian arbitrator, academic, and diplomat, garnered significant critical acclaim. Later, she transitioned to historical fiction, penning a five-part series that delved into the rise to power and complex family dynamics of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Throughout her distinguished career, she received several accolades, including the PEN Golden Jubilee Award, The Age Book of the Year, and the Australasian Prize for Commonwealth Literature.

Her most recognized work remains the biography she penned about Bob Hawke, who would later become her husband. Their paths first crossed in Jakarta in 1970, and they reconnected when Hawke, then serving as prime minister, commissioned d’Alpuget to write his life story. Hawke later publicly acknowledged that their romantic relationship began years before his divorce from his first wife, Hazel Hawke, in 1995. He and d’Alpuget exchanged vows later that same year. Their relationship frequently drew public scrutiny and criticism, particularly from Hawke's children. However, in the years preceding his death in 2019, Hawke expressed relief that the strained relations between his family and d’Alpuget had begun to improve. In her later years, d’Alpuget continued to make public appearances, notably an interview with ABC’s Nightlife in November 2025, where she openly discussed the challenging journey of her public image and her personal love life following Hawke’s demise.

Tributes have poured in, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who hailed d’Alpuget as a truly distinctive Australian personality. In a statement, Albanese remarked, "Australia has lost a true one-off." He praised her novels as "compelling works of verve and originality," and her biographies as "comprehensive and definitive — most famously those she wrote of Bob Hawke, who became her great love and ultimately her husband." Albanese described d’Alpuget’s final message as "fitting" and extended his condolences to her grieving family. Troy Bramston, a biographer of former Australian prime ministers who extensively interviewed d’Alpuget for his own biography of Hawke, remembered her as "larger than life, fun and vivacious, and a very talented writer."
