Uganda's First Son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Declares 2031 Presidential Ambition

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is the son of Uganda's current President, Yoweri Museveni, has openly declared his intention to run for the nation's top office in the 2031 general elections, aiming to succeed his father. Taking to the social media platform X, Kainerugaba made a series of pronouncements, stating, “I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,”.

The 52-year-old, currently leading Uganda’s army and also at the helm of the Patriotic League of Uganda, a notable political pressure group, has long been perceived as a potential heir to President Museveni's seat. He further expressed confidence in securing a landslide victory, projecting to win 90 percent of the votes with the backing of his father. Kainerugaba emphatically stated, “Mzee will be my campaign manager,”. 'Mzee' serves as an honorific term frequently used in Uganda to address President Museveni.

It is noteworthy that Kainerugaba had previously indicated his intention to run in the 2026 presidential election; however, he subsequently pulled out, stepping aside for his father, who ultimately secured victory in those polls. President Museveni himself has held power for over four decades, marking an extended period of leadership. The 81-year-old leader, since taking office, has twice overseen significant constitutional amendments to eliminate both presidential age and term limits, effectively enabling him to prolong his tenure. Presently, it remains uncertain whether President Museveni himself intends to pursue another term in the upcoming 2031 elections.
